What is Interlibrary Loan? What is RACER?

For OntarioTech Students, Faculty & Staff

Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is the process of requesting materials that University of Ontario Institute of Technology Library does not own from other libraries. This service is available free of charge to University of Ontario Institute of Technology students, faculty and staff. Borrowers are responsible, however, for fees imposed by the lending libraries for materials that are returned late, or have been damaged, or lost. If the resource that you require is not available in either print or electronic format within the Library, you may submit an ILL request through RACER.

The University of Ontario Institute of Technology uses the RACER System (Rapid Access to Collections by Electronic Requesting) to search and obtain materials from other Canadian academic institutions. If necessary, ILL staff will also perform extensive searches (including libraries outside of Canada) if the material cannot be found via RACER. Most items are received within seven to ten days, but some items, if ordered from the United States or International libraries, may take longer to arrive.

NOTE:  In all cases you must indicate your preferred Library location to pickup your material as part of submitting your RACER request.

Loan Period

The loan period and conditions of use are determined by the library from which the material is borrowed.  Generally, ILL books are due back approximately three weeks from the date of receipt.  The due date is indicated on the book band with no renewals. ILL MATERIAL IS SUBJECT TO RECALL AND IF RECALLED BY THE LENDING LIBRARY, MUST BE RETURNED IMMEDIATELY.

Fees

The timely return of borrowed material is essential to keeping the Library in good standing with other institutions so that they will continue to lend material. Failure to return materials by the due date may result in the suspension of borrowing privileges and delay the processing of additional requests.  Failure to return a borrowed item may result in replacement charges to the borrower, as determined by the lending library.

Daily Fine on overdue Interlibrary Loan (ILL) material is $1.00 per day, per item.
